Retro Penis Fashions

The above advertisement came out in 1976 featuring male sports stars posing in untraditional appearing men's undergarments.  Marketing men figured that the best way to convince everyday guys that wearing bright red, shocking yellow or even fish net underwear was 'cool and masculine' was to feature jock stars (men like Steve Garvey, Vic Hadfield, Lou Brock, Fred Dryer, Craig Morton, Terry Metcalf, Ed Marinaro, and Jim McMillian) wearing them in full-color advertisements.  Compared to today's underwear ads, these look tame.  But back then the ads were noticed.  They were collected.  No doubt lots of people did lots of things while looking at the men in their shorts.  Today, a vintage Jockey (good-condition) ad page sells somewhere between $7 - $15.

But in addition to different colors, there were also fresh new styles of shorts in comparison to the traditional brief or boxer.  Thigh-high cut shorts, pouches without a fly, and bikinis (also known in slang as banana hammocks) were pushed. The new phrase for these products became "men's fashion underwear" and the promotions worked well with mainstream men--well sorta.  Many guys went for the basic primary colors and prints (compared to their traditional white shorts), but unlike women, many men refused to put fashion over comfort, especially when it came to trying to fit all of their man junk into skimpy bikini pouches that didn't allow much room for moving or expansion throughout a busy day.   In the 1980s a research group for one advertising agency discovered that men, aged over 24 in their focus group, viewed the name "bikini" as having a feminine connotation to it...something that was easily fixed in future years.  Please stay tuned for part two.

I thought the exact same thing--Jim Palmer! What a hottie he was!

At the time when this was all new--I worked in the men's wear dept. of a well known department store. The funny thing was, all the guys who bought colored underwear, were the most UNSEXY guys you could imagine. I used to think to myself, "Guys, please! This ain't gonna help!" The other thing was I couldn't believe how many wives would buy their husband's underwear. This was in 1977, and I wonder is it still the same? After all, how many husbands buy their wife's underwear? [Excluding Victoria's Secret items; that's really something different and special.]

Along the same lines, I work with a guy who's a true Napoleon Syndrome type. He is short, but he's extremely masculine, and it seems he's always trying to compensate for his size. [Over masculine characteristics, drives a HUGE truck, along with an overstated swagger.] He's straight, but you could easily mistake him for a gay leather-daddy; need I say more?

He also [curiously] makes it a habit of making his underwear obvious. He wears short wasted shirts and stretches in front of you, only to show a thin layer of undies, along with a slight treasure trail. He'll also sit in a seat, and lean way forward so that his shirt raises, his underwear shows, sometimes along with the crack of his ass… Hmmm.

Needless to say, I enjoy this, but the funny thing is, his underwear is always weird. Red bikinis with white lips; black briefs with grey tribal marks--the last I saw was grey with little white muscle man silhouettes.

Your thoughts? Did this start with Under=Roos?

Steve, you are so right about those Jockey ads. I remember tearing out the Jockey ads and stroking to them, especially that last one, with the athletes and their sports equipment.

Thanks for bringing back some great memories, and reminding me of some of the roots of the fetish I still have for hunky men in briefs.

Jim Palmer ads and these ads were my first exposure to beefcake in print. I was only a kid, but the guy with the football pads was my favorite.
