Johnny are you queer?

Josie Cotton recorded her hit single "Johnny Are You Queer" under Bomp Records in 1981.  Born Kathleen Josey in Dallas, Texas, Cotton sang with Dallas area bands before moving to Los Angeles.  The performance of the single attracted the attention of Elektra Records, which re-released both the single and a full album in 1982.

Dan Kloeffler Comes Out

ABC's World News Now anchor Dan Kloeffler, who has been out to friends, family, and co-workers for years, elaborated on his ABC blog about the reasons for coming out at this time:“…I too no longer wanted to hide this part of my life.” Speaking especially to issues facing LGBT youth, Dan said, “There have been too many tragic endings and too many cases of bullying because of intolerance. As a kid I wanted someone to look up to, someone that could relate to the feelings I was having…As a journalist, I don’t want to be the story, but as a gay man I don’t want to stand silent if I can offer some inspiration or encouragement to kids that might be struggling with who they are.”

VERY HARD LIVES

Welcome to smut that's from the wrong side of the tracks...or as the Workin'MenXXX site prefers to call their models "Raw, Ragged, REAL All American Men."  Very few of us get to live out charmed lives, but for many of the guys presented at Workin'MenXXX, a series of bad personal decisions, arrests, addictions, marriages gone sour, emotional problems, and good 'old fashioned bad luck in finding work have persuaded them to drop their pants and perform.  Some of the more-handsome men who model may draw comparisons to David Hurles and his 1970's Old Reliable series, in that many of these guys offer real sexual portraits, directly off the streets from the underbelly of modern city life.  But unlike the youthful studs from Old Reliable's studio, Workin'MenXXX also includes guys who are past their prime years (and not always the most physically-attractive by today's porn standards). 

 

The creators of Workin'MenXXX have decades of experience in the genre of true amateur porn.  They created the original Southern Cumfort series before some of their current models were even born. 

REALLY 'REAL' MEN

Some of the men are very attractive.   But others look tired and worn from living hard lives.  By design, most of the Workin'MenXXX models are not cleaned up in order to appear like more than they are in their everyday lives.  The producers could give them designer underwear for the shoot and create fake bios that don't mention their real experiences. They could pretty them up, but thankfully they don't.  Their short bios also tell it like it is...they run the gambit which includes ex-cons, street hustlers, druggers, alcoholics, and homeless men who have lost their jobs and haven't been able to find new ones.  Most appear to be straight and in at least one of the "buddies" videos it's very obvious that he'd rather be anywhere else than laying under another guy's cock who's about to spray sperm all over his face and chin.  The film descriptions are honest in describing if the two models did not enjoy having sexual contact with another man, and again that is part of the non-nonsense charm of this site.  But even when telling it like they see it, it's also clear that the creators have a genuine fondness/appreciation for most of their models--a nice touch in this jaded business.

According to the site, handsome twenty-nine year old Gary was posing "Just a few hours out of jail" as this 165 pound 5'10" man with a goatee and balding hairline is described as: "[...] a nice fellow with a good heart and is trying to do the right thing. It's important to know that Workin'MenXXX is not a place to find professionally staged, perfectly lighted videos.  None of the video content is anything close to HD (unless HD stands for Hard Dick).  The Image quality runs from very-good to pretty-terrible, depending on the era (some videos are decades old).   Workin'MenXXX goes all-out so potential members know these facts: "Some info and a WARNING - these videos are VERY amateur, and some date back 20 years! No exotic locations, no orchestrated music, no elaborate sets, no multiple angle fades, etc. etc. Some of the older footage is jerky, choppy and sometimes out of focus (so is some of the new stuff - I GET EXCITED!!!). If you're a purist and expect Hollywood Quality - THEN DON'T SIGN UP."  

Videos are often offered in 2 sizes and formats. The larger are WMV's, shown at 640x480 with a bitrate of 1.49 Mbps, and the smaller are MP4 format, and are shown at 320x240 at just over 500k.  These videos are downloadable and there's no DRM which is another plus.

Models are filmed and not still-photographed.  The thumbnail images that accompany each video are there to give members a good idea of the models and the action in the movie.  The men may be rough and tough, and the videos amateur in quality, but the site design is clean, professional and everything worked as it should.  Navigation was easy and downloads were fast. There's a list of the latest updates with dates and the highest rated feeds at the top of the home page.   The simple and reliable menu was very impressive--something many sites don't get right.

Bill Condon: Gods and Monsters

 

October is the birthday month for a talented film creator, who in 1998 paid tribute to yet another famous Hollywood film creator from another generation.

We have openly gay writer/director Bill Condon to thank for bringing Gods & Monsters to the movies. The film tells the story of the last days of James Whale, the gay director of Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, The Invisible Man and Showboat. Mr. Condon was nominated for Best Director and won the award for Best Screenplay Adaptation (from Christopher Bram’s book). He also wrote and directed Kinsey, and wrote/directed the film version of Dreamgirls.  Condon was born October 22, 1955.  Happy Birthday Bill!
